Basically you either get TVR or you don't. But the heady blend of style and performance at such value is undeniably appealing, if too raw for some. However few cars offer as much drama or as much sheer accelerative performance at any price. A Lamborghini might just edge it in a high street showdown, but only because it's rarer.

On 27th May 2005, the TVR Tuscan Mark 2 was shown at the Sunday Times Motor Show. The design and appearance of the original Tuscan had always been controversial, and viewed by many critics as far too radical. Although this car was not vastly different to the old model, the appearance had been toned down slightly and it was now available for the first time as a proper drop-top instead of the signature targa design of the outgoing car. With such small changes to an existing design the Tuscan 2 received a warm welcome from the motoring press.

The straight-six engine that rumbles to life is the 3.6-litre unit producing 350bhp. This in a car which weighs only 1,100kg adds up to some pretty phenomenal straight-line acceleration, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds to be exact. Throttle response is sharp, and the torque delivery flexible enough to pin you back to the seat. Yet the gearshift and clutch are light and satisfying to use and there is enough traction to ensure that wheelspin is rarely an issue in the dry. Roof up or down, you're bombarded with a spine-tingling soundtrack that rises to a furious howl. The ride is surprisingly supple and the brakes powerful but the lack of traction control, ABS or airbags reminds you have to show some restraint in corners.

This TVR is still very much a hands-on sports car hire experience - and we wouldn't have it any other way. Sadly production of the Tuscan, one of the most desirable TVRs in the company’s history, was stopped in 2006 which gives it great exclusivity. Just like the TVR Sagaris it is seen by its fans as a benchmark British sports car.
